Is your teen bored these days?
Mine sure is.
He is playing a lot more video games and spending more time watching YouTube Videos.
Even my adult children are finding themselves on Social Media a lot more these days.
Being Bored is an unpleasant feeling. When we have an unpleasant feeling or emotion we usually do one of three things. We Avoid, We Resist or We React.
With Boredom I think my kids are all AVOIDING.
Boredom really is a state of being underwhelmed.
When that happens our teens are turning to such things as Snap Chat, Instagram, Tik Tok, YouTube or video games.
If we are not allowing our teens to be bored at times you are actually giving them a disservice. Being bored is Good for You!
One researcher says, “Boredom is both a warning that we are not doing what we want to be doing and a ‘push’ that motivates us to switch goals and projects,”
If their brain is constantly stimulated by other things they won't have the opportunity to ponder and think of the future. What their future goals will be and figure out how to achieve them.
So the next time your teen is looking a little bored, decide to encourage them to sit and be bored for a little. Maybe make a list of things they can do that doesn’t involve an electronic device and see what they come up with.
Now is the time to book a Parent Discovery Call with me so that I can start working with your Teenager or Young Adult in January.
